Cupping is an ancient technique used in Traditional Chinese Medicine where cups are placed on specific areas of the body and create a suction in the skin.
This suction creates space in between the different layers of the body and improves blood circulation and softens the adhesions in the muscles and connective tissues. It helps reduce inflammation and reduces pain.
Cupping removes toxins from the body by bringing them to the surface where they can then be cleared away via the lymphatic and circulatory systems.
The cups can cause discoloration as they help to bring old stagnant blood to the surface. These look like bruises however they are not painful. The discoloration will usually disappear within 2 to 14 days.
Often people feel awesome after cupping and it can be compared to a reverse massage.
Gua Sha is the application of a smooth tool which is used to gently scrape the superficial layers of the skin.
Please note that cupping and gua sha is not offered as a separate treatment, however it may be part of a regular acupuncture treatment.
